Cited Retrieval

How Pantasso returns source-backed answers and reports gaps when context is insufficient.

Cited Retrieval

Cited retrieval is how Pantasso answers questions using your workspace data. Every answer traces back to its source, and gaps are reported instead of papered over.

How it works

When you ask a question, Pantasso:

  1. Searches approved workspace objects for relevant content.
  2. Evaluates whether enough context exists to answer.
  3. Returns source-backed material with citations, or reports what is missing.

Citations

Every answer includes references to the workspace objects it drew from. Citations tell you:

  • Which source the information came from (Slack message, Google Doc, uploaded file, etc.)
  • When the source material was last synced.
  • Where in the source the relevant content appears.

Gap behavior

When Pantasso cannot find enough context to answer safely, it does not guess. Instead, it returns a gap report that explains:

  • What was searched.
  • What was found (partial context, if any).
  • What is missing.
  • What sources might need to be connected to answer the question.

This is a deliberate design choice. A clear gap report is more useful than a confident answer from insufficient data.

Query types

Pantasso handles several types of questions:

  • Factual queries: "What was decided about the launch timeline?"
  • Summary queries: "What happened in the product channel this week?"
  • Context queries: "What does the team know about new-user onboarding?"
  • Gap queries: "Do we have documentation for the API rate limits?"

For AI assistants

AI assistants with Pantasso agent profiles use cited retrieval to ground their answers in company data. The assistant receives the same citations and gap reports that a human user would see. This means:

  • Assistants answer from real company context, not training data.
  • Assistants can report when they lack sufficient context.
  • All assistant queries are logged in the workspace activity history.

Limitations

  • Cited retrieval only searches approved workspace objects. Content that has not been imported is not searchable.
  • Results depend on source freshness. If a source has not synced recently, answers may not reflect the latest information.
  • Pantasso does not search the public internet. All answers come from your workspace.
